The ruins of Freudenstein Castle are today known as the observation tower Šlikovka. In the early 16th century, it was built by the Šlik family to protect the silver mines. In 1525, it was plundered by rebellious miners. In 1639, it was destroyed by the Swedes. Today, the tower, parts of the bastion, walls, and a tower with Gothic corbels remain.
The remnants of the castle can be found to the west above the valley of the now spa town of Jáchymov. The best approach is via the road from Karlovy Vary to Boží Dar, continually uphill to the upper square, and after the Church of St. Joachim take a narrow left turn, passing through the Svornost mine towards Nové Město and Mariánská. This road, after a steep climb, actually passes through the now non-existent castle area, which is only accessible from the exterior. Parking near the castle along the road is very limited.
