Former Mine Eva

The Eva Apfelbaum Mine (Evina jabloň) is mentioned in the work Sarepta by the Jáchymov preacher Johann Mathesius. He describes the discovery of silver wires "as thick as goose quills and half an ell long". This mine was located in the vicinity of the settlement Werlsgrün (Zálesí). In 1801, the state purchased shares in this mine, among others, thus becoming its sole owner. However, by 1850, the mine was closed, and the residents of Zálesí employed there either left or returned to occupations in cattle breeding or forest work.

During the subsurface exploration conducted in 1947, indications of uranium ore presence were found, leading to the reconstruction of the old mine into Eva Mine. After 1950, prisoners from the Eliáš and Mariánská camps were deployed to work here.

The metal headframe was 21 meters high. The ore sorting plant was housed in a wooden building with a footprint of 20 x 15 meters. The dimensions of the fenced area with an irregular pentagon footprint were approximately 400 x 400 meters. The fence was three meters high, double-layered, made of barbed wire. A five-meter shooting range was located between the fences and on the outer side of the enclosure. Surrounding the mine, there were 7 guard towers with spotlights, and two of them were additionally equipped with a light machine gun. Every five meters, there was a lighting pole (200W light bulb).

After the cessation of uranium mining, an interesting situation arose during the reclamation of the area and the obliteration of traces of massive uranium mining. It was decided that the abandoned buildings would be taken over by ONV Most and a Nature School would be established there. Classrooms were created in the place of the workshops, a gymnasium was built from the engine room above the mining shaft, and the prison barracks were converted into dormitories, a kitchen, and a dining room. This Nature School was still operational in the early 1990s. Today, only the remnants of the buildings remain.
