The defunct village of Popov is located 5 km south of the town of Jáchymov. The settlement, originally named Pfaffengrün, was founded during the German colonization in the 13th century. Popov had two separate parts: Upper Popov, which was situated in the saddle between Popov Hill and Popov Peak, and Lower Popov, lying lower on the southwestern slope. The inhabitants made a living from forestry work, cattle breeding, charcoal production, and later lace-making. At the end of the 19th century, Popov had 12 houses where 87 inhabitants of German nationality lived. After their expulsion in 1945, Popov ceased to exist. In the upper part of the village, only the torso of a chapel and two memorial lindens remained. In Lower Popov, the ruins of several buildings, slowly being engulfed by thickening forest vegetation, persisted. The fate of Popov was sealed by subsequent uranium mining, which made the area practically entirely cut off from the outside world. The village's name was perhaps only associated with the nearby municipal waste landfill.
