Tábor Nikolaj served as a penal labor camp for housing unfree labor forces employed in the extraction of uranium ore. The captives and prisoners detained there mined uranium ore in the local mines Nikolaj and Eduard. The camp became notorious for the illegalities committed against the prisoners held there. Nothing has been preserved from the original camp. Today, an educational trail called Jáchymovské peklo leads around the camp area. Even notable personalities served their sentences in the camp, such as Augustin Bubník, Karel Pecka, and Rudolf Pernický.
