India is a multicultural country, which also means it is diverse in terms of traditions and culinary specifics. Indian cuisine is a wide array of flavors and aromas. According to many culinary experts, Indian cuisine cannot be compared to any other national cuisine. Indian cuisine distinguishes six basic tastes: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, astringent, and pungent. From these basic tastes, it then creates a perfect blend of flavors and aromas.
Typical sides:
The foundation of a common Indian meal is a naan bread or rice. When talking about rice, the most common type encountered is Basmati rice. In Hindi, the word Basmati means "queen of fragrance," and Basmati rice is rightly regarded as such. Other types include, for example, saffron rice or curry rice.
Meat dishes:
Meat dishes are mainly prepared from lamb, poultry, but also from fish and minced meat. In some regions of India, pork can be found on the menu, but this meat is considered impure. One type of meat that is not found in Indian cuisine is beef. The cow is considered a sacred animal that must not be harmed.
Vegetarian dishes:
The most commonly used vegetables for the preparation of vegetarian dishes are potatoes, legumes, cauliflower, eggplant, and tomatoes. Many types of vegetables are grown in India, and thanks to this, a large portion of dishes are based on baked or fried pieces of vegetables in various combinations along with various types of spices.
Indian desserts:
After a good and hearty meal, dessert follows. Indian desserts are very sweet and always contain milk, sugar, and fat. Local restaurants offer a dessert that sweet lovers will definitely enjoy.
