Given that the 13th century is quite far from our own, we didn't add too many extra kilometers to the trip, but it’s up to you how far you want to extend the excursion. So let's get started!
We left our car at the parking lot in the Krásný Les - Horní Hrad part of the village, which is guarded by protected monumental oaks near the Panská louka. The first thing that will surely catch your eye on the way to the castle is the colorful sea of plants lining the tributary of the Hornohradský Creek Natural Monument. Purple Corydalis, yellow marsh marigolds, primroses, protected petasites or white anemones in an enticing combination. Don't be tempted to lie down just yet, as it is still quite damp, but do take the turn-off to the castle forecourt. From the information panels along the Horní Hrad Educational Trail, you can learn, for example, why the castle did not have its own garden in the 13th century or what punishments awaited those who did not respect nature. The entire educational trail has 8 stops and is about 2 km long; we saved the second part for the way back.
And now we climb to the monumental structure, also known by the name Hauenštejn. The name itself (hauen - hoe, ax, mallet; stein - rock, castle) indicates that mining was carried out in the area, as in most parts of the Krušné Mountains. The castle most likely originated as a royal estate in the second half of the 13th century, but it is not entirely clear who was responsible. After its establishment, the castle frequently changed owners and was the subject of various pledges. A significant role in its history was played by the Šlik family and Countess Gabriela Buquoyová, who was responsible for a major reconstruction. Then came the war, during which the castle was used as a Hitler Youth center, later as a children's detention home, and from 1958 it stood uninhabited, gradually turning into a ruin destined for demolition.
Today, on the contrary, the castle offers a lot of entertainment opportunities. You can explore the entire area with a printed guide, visit the multi-story Gothic cellars, the knight's hall with its original wooden carved ceiling, climb the castle tower, visit the beautiful castle chapel with a view of the entire castle and surroundings, walk through the Jaroslav Hejtík Arboretum with endemic and unique tree species, and greet the freely roaming peacocks. You even have the option to stay overnight, send your children to camp here, attend one of the many events held, have something good to eat, sit by the fire, or explore the local information center. It is open daily; just call ahead on weekdays.
The difference between the last two paragraphs was made by the Horní Hrad Public Benefit Society with significant contributions from the public, volunteers, patrons, and the region. You too can support its gradual restoration, even if just by visiting, which you certainly won’t regret. Follow them on their website, Facebook, and Instagram.
