The Chomutov Crypt Welcomes Visitors After Years

For the first time since 1952, it will be possible to visit the Jesuit crypt beneath the altar of the Church of St. Ignatius in Chomutov Square on European Heritage Day.

The crypt served as the final resting place for Jesuit monks from the late seventeenth century, and according to some sources, up to 140 oak coffins containing the remains of Jesuits were stored there. It was last opened to visitors in the 1950s. Although the tomb is now empty, it has retained its oppressive atmosphere, further intensified by the episode of a chimney sweep's tragic and helpless death.

You will have the opportunity to explore the appearance and history of the crypt on Saturday, 12 September, when the Chomutov Library will reopen the underground of the Church of St. Ignatius to the public as part of the European Heritage Days. The ceremonial opening of the crypt will take place at 10 a.m., and it will be open for visits until 5 p.m.
