History will come alive in Jelení - The Day of Lost Villages will commemorate places that have disappeared from the map
On Saturday, 20th September, the third annual Day of Abandoned Villages will take place in the area of the former village of Jelení in the Krušné hory. The event commemorates the fate of places that were once home to hundreds of people and today remain only as traces in the landscape and memories of witnesses.
Abandoned villages are not just a thing of the past - they are part of our identity. Many places, such as Jelení (German Hirschenstand), disappeared after the Second World War due to the displacement of inhabitants, the expansion of military areas, or because of mining and harsh natural conditions. Jelení, located in the very heart of the mountains, was once a lively village with a mining tradition dating back to the 16th century. However, after 1945, it gradually began to vanish from the map - its definitive end came with the intervention of an engineering unit in 1964, when even the last remnants of houses and the church were removed.
Today's generation is once again remembering these places - and this is precisely what the Day of Abandoned Villages serves for. Visitors can look forward to a varied programme, starting at 10 a.m. and lasting until the evening. There will be concerts, a guided walk through the abandoned village, an exhibition of historical photographs, and also the premiere of a documentary featuring testimonies of witnesses.
Local refreshments, stalls with regional products, handicrafts, and books with a Krušné hory theme will not be missing. The highlight of the entire day will be the evening illumination of the original village buildings - a symbolic reminder of the individual houses where people once lived.
"With this day, we want to commemorate not only the places themselves but above all the human stories connected with them," says Štěpán Javůrek, director of the Krušnohoří destination agency. "It is also a call for greater respect for our landscape and its story."
